Catharina N. Rima

by Steve Rima

Catharina N. Rima was born in 1779 at New Petersburg, Tryon County, New York. Why they waited to name the last daughter after the mother is unknown. It is possible that there was a Catharina Rima born earlier who may have died.

She married probably in 1797 to a Mr. Jacob Hochstaeder, son of Christian Hochstaeder at Minden, New York. They were listed as married in 1800 on the census at Herkimer.

When the family spread apart in the late 1810s the Hochstaeders moved west to Cattaraugus County, New York. A small town called Ashford would be their home for the next 40 years. He was a farmer with good farm land for those times. They were both living in 1850 age 70 and 71. In 1855 he was listed as 76 years old and widowed. He was gone by 1860. They are buried at Ashford Hollow Cemetery across the road from what was probably the church they attended. Jacob was a Veteran of the War of 1812. Catherine died first on February 6, 1855 in her 77th year. Jacob died on October 19, 1859 aged just two months short of 80 years. They kept contact with their family because in 1850 one of Frederick's granddaughters married on of Catherine's sons.
